Federal prison for Oregon tax protester
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Federal prosecutors say a former Florence real estate agent who stopped filing returns and started sending protest material to tax agencies has been sentenced to more than three years in prison.
The U.S. attorney's office says 54-year-old Randall Blair Johnson of Sisters also was ordered to pay $260,000 in restitution and a $50,000 fine.
Prosecutors say Johnson was a real estate agent in Florence who stopped filing tax returns in 2002, claiming the tax laws didn't apply to him.
He was convicted in June of tax evasion, failing to file and witness tampering.
The U.S. attorney's office said Wednesday the sentence of 41 months included time Judge Ann Aiken added because Johnson had tried to influence grand jury testimony and because of the "sophisticated means " used to conceal income and assets.
