EUGENE, Ore. - A man found face down, not breathing and without a pulse Monday night at the Occupy Eugene camp was beaten and choked and suffered multiple facial fractures, police said.
The victim has been identified as Rick Adam Youngblood, 54, of Florence.
Police said alcohol appears to have played a factor in the dispute, which may have been a case of mutual combat.
Police and Occupy Eugene medic began CPR on Youngblood until he could be taken to the hospital for treatment.
His current condition is not known, police said. They earlier described his injuries as life-threatening.
City Manager Jon Ruiz informed Mayor Kitty Piercy of the incident just after midnight Tuesday. Piercy called a special meeting of the City Council, where councilors voted 5-2 to lift the exemption to the city park camping ban that had allowed the Occupy Eugene camp to remain in place.
Occupy advocates told KVAL News Youngblood came into the camp and started the fight. Some Occupiers said the City is using the incident as an excuse to dismantle the camp.
Police Chief Pete Kerns at Tuesday's meeting enumerated a number of violent incidents recorded at the camp in recent weeks, including an incident where a man suffered a bone fracture when he was attacked with an ax.
EUGENE, Ore. - A police officer gave CPR to a man found unconscious at the Occupy Eugene camp Monday night in what police said was at least the 5th fight of the night.
The 54-year-old white male, who appeared to have been the victim of a fight or assault, was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, said Melinda McLaughlin, a Eugene Police Department spokeswoman.
The officer found the man around 10:40 p.m., the apparent victim of at least the fifth fight officers responded to at the camp in Washington-Jefferson park between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. Monday night.
McLaughlin said police did not yet know whether the man was part of the Occupy Eugene camp or not.
The violent crimes unit set up a mobile command center on site as officers interviewed possible witnesses and gathered evidence.
