Fire in trash bin burns apartment building
A trash bin fire spread to the adjacent apartment complex

EUGENE, Ore. - A fire that started in a garbage pin and spread to an apartment building early Tuesday morning appears suspicious, police said.

The fire happened around 2 a.m. Tuesday at apartments near 12th and Ferry streets.

The fire was put out before it did any major damage.

A man who lives in the building told KVAL News he saw someone standing in the alley minutes before the fire.

"I saw a guy standing on a bike at the entrance to the alley way smoking a cigarette and kind of looked suspicious," Sonny Mehta said. "I went back home and 20 minutes later the fire alarm started going off.

"I knew it was a fire and not someone screwing around because all of these windows are exposed so there are open windows here, so smoke was just coming in."

Police ask anyone who may have witnessed anything suspicious to contact them.
