Fire officials: One hurt by blaze in 'vacant home'

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- A fire at a vacant home on the outskirts of Springfield early Thursday morning sent one person to the hospital, fire officials said.

Crews arrived on-scene shortly after midnight to find a house on Jasper Road near Clearwater Park engulfed in flames.

Officials said that firefighters found someone injured by the blaze, but didn’t comment on the person’s injuries.

Neighbors told KVAL News that homeless people often hang out at the vacant home. Nearby Springfield-resident James Apparcel said he’s thankful fire crews arrived in time to put out the fire.

“There's all these big trees up here, so much garbage around the house it coulda spread really quick if it didn't get noticed," Apparcel said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and the injured victim has not yet been identified.
