Firefighter working on wildfire near The Dalles injures back in fall

THE DALLES, Ore. – A firefighter working on the Government Flats complex near The Dalles injured his back Saturday morning when he slipped while stepping out of a vehicle, fire officials said.

The man in his 40s fell about three feet and landed on his back.

Fire officials said the back injury was serious enough to transfer the man from a hospital in The Dalles to OHSU in Portland. The firefighter’s name has not been released.

More than 1,000 firefighters are battling the Government Flats complex, which is made up of the Blackburn, Government Flat, and Wells fires about ten miles southwest of The Dalles. All three fires were caused by lightning on Aug. 16.

The complex is now 12,000 acres in size and 25 percent contained.

More than 200 homes in the area have been given evacuation notices or notices to prepare for evacuation.
