EUGENE, Ore. -- For the last five years, River Road Elementary School has combined native-Spanish speaking and English speaking students in classrooms to give kids a curriculum including both languages.
The about 30 children who started the immersion program at River Road/El Camino del Rio Elementary five years ago are ready to take on the dual immersion program at Kelly Middle School.
They're the first group to enter Kelly Middle School under the Spanish immersion program.
School principal Wes Finn said this can be a bit tough in the early stages, but now that they've acquired the building the blocks the real fun can begin.
“In middle school, typically we start to see kids out perform their peers as their cognitive skills come up,” said Wes Finn.
Finn said the program is designed to grow with them until they reach North Eugene High School.
