Food For Lane County youth farm stands start summer season

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Young gardeners are got to see the fruits of their labor Saturday as Food For Lane County’s youth produce stands opened up for the summer season.

The stands are part of a program that gets a group of teenagers into the garden to learn how to cultivate fruits and veggies.

They are paid minimum wage for their hard work in the garden and managing the stands.

“So they get to learn about all those vegetables. How to use them at home, how good they taste, how to grow them,” said Jen Anonia, a program manager from FFLC. “We also covered a lot of other gardening skills, composting, soil science and they learn about nutrition.”

The stand, located at Sacred Heart at RiverBend in Springfield, opens each Thursday from 2-6 pm through October.
