ROSEBURG, Ore. - As the U.S. winds down troop levels in Afghanistan, dozens of members of Charlie Company 1-186 with the National Guard are preparing to deploy there.

"We are going to be a guard force for a task force located in Afghanistan," said Capt. Vasilios Garyfallou with Charlie Company in Roseburg. "So things that are involved with that are just base infantry tactics."

Charlie Company will be stationed at Bagram Airfield, the largest U.S. military base in Afghanistan.

"We're up for the task. We're ready for it," Garyfallou said. "I know my soldiers are ready for it. We can't talk about specifics because of operational security, but they're basic skills at tactics that infantry soldiers are good at doing, and our soldiers will do well."

Charlie Company's deployment is set for nine months, which means there is no mid-tour leave.

"Any time you do an overseas deployment there's a lot of concerns about soldier safety, about families back home, about the welfare of people in general," said Owen Lee, executive officer with Charlie Company.

The company will head to Fort Hood in Texas for 60 days of intense training before they head to bagram.
