Fugitive shoots self as sheriff, FBI close in
BURNS, Ore. - A wanted man shot and killed himself in a remote corner of Oregon as the FBI and county sheriff's office closed in on him Wednesday afternoon.
The man's identity has not yet been released, pending positive identification of his body. But Oregon State Police said he is believed to be a fugitive out of Indiana.
The Harney County sheriff, a sheriff's sergeant and an FBI Special Agent were driving up a dirt road to talk to the man around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday when they saw a pickup with a rifle hanging in the window rack driving away on another dirt road on the other side of a fence.
The man stopped and got out and spoke to the law enforcement officers from across the fence.
He then got back in the pickup to flee, state police said.
Harney County Sheriff David Glerup and Sergeant Brian Needham both fired at least one round at the truck, police said. The FBI agent did not fire.
The officers caught up with the pickup a 1/4 mile later. They found the man inside the truck with a gunshot wound to the head.
Medics responded to the scene and pronounced the man dead.
