Police: Teen shot dead along Hwy 6, suspect kills himself
TILLAMOOK, Ore. – A girl found dead along Highway 6 east of Tillamook late Friday night was shot to death, state police said.
Investigators said 16-year-old Kayla Ann Hendrickson was from the Beaverton, Ore. area. An autopsy done Sunday morning confirmed Hendrickson died of gunshot wounds.
Beaverton School District officials confirmed she attended Sunset High School for a short time during the last school year.
Police also identified a person of interest in the case as Jacob Allen Green, 24, of Newport, Ore. They said Green shot himself on Saturday, Jan. 19 along the Northern California Coast.
He was taken to a hospital but later died.
"Green was operating a vehicle matching the description of one which was sought as a vehicle of interest in connection with the Highway 6 death investigation," police said in a press release. They said Green knew Hendrickson.
Lt. Gregg Hastings said an Oregon State Police trooper found Hendrickson’s body late Friday after a witness reported suspicious circumstances on the highway two miles east of Jordan Creek Road.
About 25 minutes before the discovery, the witness saw a full-size pickup stopped on the shoulder of the westbound lane, and a man and a woman were seen outside the vehicle.
Police said Green was seen in Humboldt County, Calif. in a vehicle matching the suspicious vehicle’s description.
So far, investigators have not said why Hendrickson was shot or what may have caused Green to take his own life.
A half-dozen law enforcement agencies in Oregon and California are investigating the deaths.
Green's family released a statement on Monday:
"The family of Jacob Green acknowledges that this is a terrible tragedy for everyone involved. It asks the public to respect its privacy and extends its deepest sympathy to the family of Kayla Ann Hendrickson."
Hendrickson's family did not wish to make a statement.
KVAL.... what happened to the 'dislike' button??? You used to have one... Half these comments need to be 'disliked'....
Â
Prayers go to the family and friends of both Miss Hendrickson and Jacobs. They will be missed by many.Â
@Myownopinion! I will take my innappropriate remarks off. It seems that we read about gun deaths so much that we have become desensitized to it. Some of us, if not most of us have lost friend(s)/loved one(s) from guns (God knows I have), that we forget to express our condolences, before expressly jumping into another gun debate. I don't think it makes the so called "gun nuts" or "libtards" commentators any less sympathetic, but a good scolding, and reminder that someone's loved one has just recently died is well-deserved and welcomed Thank you!Â
The death of a child is such a tragedy. My deepest sympathy to the family of Kayla Ann Hendrickson. May she rest in peace.
When I saw 27 comments on this story, I figured there must be something interesting about it. Nope, just the gun nuts.
@Rich Dean In the interest of accuracy, the very first post here (and the one that started the conversation) was by the incredibly uninformed ANTI-gun nut , Baldr Odinson. Who had nothing to say about the victim, only his warped agenda.
28 comments before me, and I am the first to mention this girl, or post my profound sympathy to this young girls family? Get off your political agenda, and have some respect.
Â
I hope her parents and family can survive this tragedy.
@JCB I completely agree. We, as a society, read about this tragic death of a young member of our society, and then proceed to completely ignore that life. Completely self centered and wrong...
Â
To the family and friends of Ms. Kayla Ann Hendrickson: I am so sorry for your loss. I hope that you are able to get some answers. Even more then answers, I hope that you are able to move past the sorrow and remember the good times, the happiness, and the smiles.
So when guns are banned and only the criminals and police have them and the police are an hour away....who is going to protect the person that doesn't have a gun? Since we don't have enough money to keep enough police on shift, things are going to go down hill even faster. Â We are turning out uneducated kids because there wasn't enough funding. Â Then we can't keep them in jail when they have done something wrong because there wasn't enough funding. Â How will the people who are smarter than the rest going to protect themselves if guns are banned. Â I don;t see this country making any progress, what I do see eventually there will be another civil war and it won't be between the Ducks and Beavers.
@really_just really Lol do you really consider yourself "one of the smart ones"
@GoDucks  @really_just Smarter than you Chris.
@really_just really i am not proguns nor am i against them. You however, are profoundly accurate in your description of reality. Our reality in Oregon anyway.
I have a friend who went to a gun show Saturday, and oh my gosh, they came out alive! No guns went off the whole time they were there. They walked by them, held them and nothing happened. Hmmmmm??? Guns had a whole bunch of people right there, why didn't they decide to shoot? For people who thinks guns shoot themselves, you have to to be a complete moron!!Â

Everybody is going to pick on BO again. I will stick up for you Buddy! Your passion and sympathy for the unnecessary death and suffering of people by jerks that so easily get a hold of guns is commendable. The way the progun folks outnumber BO and defamate him, makes readers think he pulled the trigger and is holding the "smoking gun" for his views. I respect his comments, because he is brave enough to speak out among so many progun folk.
For all you progun people whom I dearly respect, please don't all open fire on BO with your machine gun typing digits. Then, I lose my respect for you all.Â
We can not have a meaningful informative debate if you kill off the last anti-gun hold out. Shame on you Bullies! BO has redeeming value if not for that alone. Even a broken clock is right twice a day, and you bullies want to shoot the clock off the wall even when BO is most certainly correct.
@peace Ah, more low hanging fruit!
Â
There are 62 million registered vehicles in the US. There are 110 deaths on average PER DAY caused by said vehicles for a total of 40,150 per year.
Â
Depending on which source you believe, there are about 300 million guns in the hands of Americans. In 2010 there were 11,078 homicides caused by an idiot with a gun.
Â
You do the math.
Â
I ask again, why aren't you anti-2nd amendment nuts railing against the automobile?
Â
If body count is your argument (and judging by all your posts, it seems to be) then why is your anger so misplaced?
Â
Â
@OregonOrator---low hanging fruit? Sorry, I don't know what that means. I only know we shook the peaches from the tree, before using them as target practice and rendering them inedible.
As for your classic arguement with cars. It is the oldest/worthless chestnut in the master debaters tree. We don't need cars for transport. Please try to shoot yourself to the nearest gun show WITH a gun. Some M-16s can be converted to pogo sticks with a bit of ingenuity...butttttttt
No one needs a bullet to transport anything from point A to point B (except lead). But, any idiot can shoot a bullet from point A to point B and kill you.
That would make me so very very sad that I would probably get in car accident from the tears impairing my vision while trying to drive to your funeral.
Â
Â
Â
Gotta luv 'merca.
@LifeisGOOD007 I do. If you don't, you're free to find a system that suits you better.
@LifeisGOOD007 Not as much as I used to, but I'm still not hating it like you idiot liberals.

@censoredirawoody @OregonOrator---"agenda" implies that I may benefit personally by trying to sway/spin the masses opinions towards one way or another. My only intent on these forums is learning more or trying to get better informed about this broad topic of gun control, before I can even guess what my benefit will be. This doesn't make me any less sympathetic to the trajedy.
Your accusations really are a CHEAP SHOT cowboy. Get off your high horse!Â
Â
@peace  @OregonOrator your right about the us versus them mentality its what Obama built his platform on, the poor against the rich, and its sad to see liberals care more about guns than this young lady her family and the horrid fear that went through her mind as she died, but you have your agenda dont you
Bow down and worship your gun, fellow gun owners. Take reverence in its simplicity to kill. Kneel at your altar of gun worship!  Forget about those commands: "thou shalt not kill" and "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything..." Worship thee ye almighty GUN!! Hallelujah! Praise thee to the mighty gun!!
@LifeisGOOD007 so you would prefer he stab her to death? you care more about posting your hate than the pain she went through,

@OregonOrator ---I would rather whip out my multi-variable calculus among the XYZ plane rather than a gun, but you probably can't do the JHS algebraic math of two trains traveling in the opposite direction.from point A to point B. Any idiot can quote statistics, and we all know what "TWAIN" said about that. Pun intended.
Don't judge me wrong, I just believe in compromise and a meeting ground w/o calling people idiots, when your opponents (LIBERALS as you lable them) may have something to contribute.Â

Another victim, killed by a gun on "gun appreciation day".

@MP SGT Words do have meaning.  Unfortunately, the meanings you ascribe to them are wrong.
Â
Suicides with guns are violent, and thus count as "gun violence." Â I've lost a teen friend to suicide by gun. Â The tragedy is real, and the fact that there was a loaded, unsecured gun in the home was completely controllable and preventable. Â Define it as you wish, in whatever "patriotic" manner makes you somehow feel better about needless deaths, but it doesn't change the fact that there were 70,000 such suicides by gun last year, and each and every one of them could have been prevented.
@Baldr Odinson @censoredirawoody ---I know my father must have become a statistic back in the 70s probably before the founding of the NCIPC. But, my former landlord is definitely 1 of the 19,392 in 2010 (Nov. I believe). One among far too many far as I can tell.
@censoredirawoody  @Baldr Odinson  @peace My apologies, "Woody" is correct.  It turns out the 70K value is all non-fatal gun-related injuries (including non-fatal suicides).  Here is the most recent values I could find:
Â
In 2010, 19,392 U.S. residents killed themselves with a firearm (National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC)).
Â
in 2011, 3,224 people survived an attempt to kill themselves with a gun (NCIPC, 2011).
@Baldr Odinson  @peace I did a little research.32 k suicides per year in the USA not just guns guns were a small part of it. most were pills not even close to the 70 k
@peace   Thanks, "Peace".  That's 70,000 suicides each year in the U.S., sadly.
@Baldr Odinson @MP SGT ---after living in japan with many other ex-pats, we all agreed/confessed to being lucky that none of us could possibly get a hold of a gun to keep around the house. A few admitted that there were times that they would have used it on themselves or others as an impulse, before they could calm down.
All of us ex-pats agreed that the Japanese were mostly beautiful people, but that it only took one fart to stink up the room. And, the flatulence was often too uncomfortable to tolerate.
Drinking beer and pantomiming the historical drunken Samurai that would just chop off the head of the village idiot for pleasure, was our favourite way to blow off steam. We would also pantomime kicking the head around too.
Â
BTW, is that 70,000 figure for the USA or the WORLD? Either way, it is a compelling and tragic number that could be a lot lower w/o a gun around. I lost my father in this way when I was 7. 1 friend of mine in the 5th grade playing russian roulette, and just 2 years ago in Roseburg, a dear landlord who had too many dead beat tenants not paying their rent. To Bob Cleveland, may he rest in peace.
@MP SGT @Baldr Odinson ---I was properly informed by MP, FJ and a few others about the assault rifle/weapon/firearm misnomer debate during those massacres last month. For that I am grateful. Helped me focus on other solutions (if they reasonably exist) to nuts---in this story a crime of passion it seems---having them at the wrong time.
As for the suicide statistic, the bullet to the head is usually final, and gives the poor lost soul no second chance. W/o a gun around, there would be 3X more "unsuccessful attempts" and less successes. That is the general ratio in the country notorious for the highest suicide rate in the world. Were guns readily available in that country, that rate would be 3X higher than it already is. Being Japanese can be a misereably hard life at times (which explains why I refused to apply for J. citizenship). Psychological/spiritual warfare/torture/pressure (AKA seishin teki (ni) no atsu roku) becomes so severe that people jump on train tracks (slowing up the train lines network for millions of travelers), jump from high buildings and land on others, light themselves on fire while burning the house/building/ business and/or neighborhood down and killing others, CO1 poisoning from charcoal/propane gas so Mom or Dad can take out the whole family while they sleep in their futons. And, don't forget all of the overprescribed benzos like rohypnol (ruffies)!
Some might argue quite logically that a bullet might save everybody a lot of suffering. AND, those unsuccessful attemps (3X more) are often a fate worse than death and a nightmare for family and loved ones.Â

Quit pickin' on BO folks! Gosh! He didn't shoot anybody...yet
@Baldr Odinson You are kidding right?  The gun killed the person?  I don't think so...the person who pulled the trigger of the gun did the killing.
@Baldr Odinson Another 110 people killed by an automobile as well. Where's your outrage over the substantially  higher body count created by the automobile?
@OregonOrator ---Once again. The human race depends on the automobile for travel in order to survive. Advances in technology have made them safer (eg. airbags). Alternatives like mass transit, bikes, are always welcome. My focus is on advances in technology OR mental health in a society where guns galore end up in the nuts hands. The human race need not depend on lead projectiles for human survival. Alternatives such as stun guns, mace, and rubber bullets are always welcome. But, they do have their shortcomings, as do mass transit and bicycles. I look up to the progunners for advances in technology and solutions. I know the guntards or libtards do not have the answers, and always fear they will make some idiotic legislation making the problem worse as they have in the past.
@OregonOrator ---you are always using the words outrage and anger. Most of us (liberals?)Â are calm and just trying to comment w/o being called idiots and hot heads.
Isn't that why most people should not have guns to begin with. No need to get in a gun fight Annie Oakly!
@Ah Shucks ---that does seem to be a pattern. FJ used the term guntard to illustrate that it is not the conservative progun people gone whacko. Point well taken. I do admit to being a guntard (which is why I don't have one yet), but I hope you don't think I am a lib tard.
 @OregonOrator  @Baldr Still stuck conflating issues. Now you're just a tool.Â
@LifeisGOOD007 @Baldr So if body count ISN'T an issue for you, just what is? Your emotional attachment to the liberal "GUNS IS BAD BOSS!" mantra?
@Baldr Odinson I thought Saturday was gun appreciation day. And yes no matter what we do bad people will have guns.
Yep. That gun drove its own pickup truck, pulled the truck over to the side of the road, pointed itself at the girl, and pulled its own trigger.
Â
Not only that... the gun shot itself to death on Saturday! Amazing!
Â
@oregoncraig Yeah, there are still idiots out there that believe GUNS kill people.  Only hatefilled people use items to kill other people--that would include guns, knives, baseball bats, cars, etc. Â
@RedHeads4Romney @oregoncraig ---not seeing any baseball bats, switch blades, or VWs used by our soldiers in combat among a primarily innocent civilian population in Afgan. If so, a 16-year-old girl might have had a fighting chance here in the USA & Afganistan.
