Guilty plea sets man free from jail

EUGENE, Ore. - A man jailed since an altercation with police last month went free Monday after pleading guilty and having his sentence imposed as time served.
Jessie Wright, 30, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges in a plea agreement. The charges stem from a post-birthday brush with police.
Police said an intoxicated Wright got in an officer's face as the birthday boy left a downtown bar early Saturday, February 23. Police said Wright resisted arrest and accused him of turning a police Taser on an officer.
Wright's friends and family denied the police account of what happened and questioned why Wright was held in jail even as other inmates went free due to overcrowding.
On Monday, Wright pleaded guilty to reduced charges and was sentenced to 15 days in jail and 2 years probation. He was let go as having served his jail time while awaiting trial.
Attempts to contact Wright and his friends for comment Tuesday went unanswered.
A police spokeswoman said police couldn't talk about the case until it went to trial; even once she was made aware that the case had been processed by the court system, the spokeswoman refused comment.
But he assaulted a cop, making him more dangerous, unlike the downtown stabber guy.

People always make sound decisions when they are drunk. I'm certain the police just "misunderstood" Jessie's trying to point out the real troublemakers in the room.
Poor Jessie, victim of the big bad cops and their bullying ways...poor poor Jessie (idiot)
@flor3nc3Â sarcasm noted!
Since when did raising a finger at an officer become a crime? When did a finger become a lethal weapon where police must use force to subdue the finger wielding citizen? It is all to obvious that we can't trust those who are sworn to protect citizens. Look at ex-officer Dorner and Officer Gilberto Valle who plotted to kidnap and eat women and hundreds more. Bad cops everywhere and they are all too gun/taser happy. He had to change his plea to guilty or he would never be let out.
@jonsies An officer doesn't have be be threatened with a "lethal weapon" to use force. Force is used until compliance is reached. You really should do some basic research before you starting talking about things you know nothing about. He didn't raise a finger to the officer, he tazed him, big difference. if somebody is willing to hurt a police officer, what else are they willing to do? What most of the people commenting on these forums don't realize is that Eugene contracts so many beds in the jail for their municipal court. So, regardless of how many inmates are being released on felony crimes, Eugene still has the same number of beds for the municipal court. This idiot didn't have to plead guilty. He could have went to trial. He chose to plead guilty to avoid paying the bail which in my mind must mean he was guilty. Innocent people don't plead guilty in a court of law to something they didn't do.
As for you comment about bad cops, you are right, there are bad cops everywhere. There are also bad plumbers, doctors, CPA's, salesman, and every other profession you can think of. Police officers uphold laws. Most people don't like to be told what to do and therefore don't like the police. Can you imagine a society with no laws and nobody to enforce them? Laws that are challenged time and time again clear up to the US Supreme Court. Sometimes certain laws are found to be unconstitutional for one reason or another and things change. That is the way this country works. If you don't like it move elsewhere.
@Chemla @jonsies @Chemla...go back and read the original story before you get on your high horse.  The cops pushed this idiots buttons, and created the situation.  Very unprofessional.  Hell, I can handle a drunk better than they did, and I am not taxpayer trained.  Thus "no comment" from PD.
Time served...drunk dude gets a birthday story, and bully cop gets a bigger attitude.
Your real lucky, Jessie
Get outa town !
