One dead, one injured in Hwy 99 crash

EUGENE, Ore. -- One person was killed in a two truck collision on Highway 99 Friday afternoon, Police said.

A tan Toyota pickup truck carrying two people was driving northbound on Highway 99 Friday afternoon when at around 2:20 p.m. a silver Chevy pickup truck attempted to turn left from Awbrey Lane onto Hwy 99 (crossing the northbound lane to the southbound lane). The Toyota ran into the side of the Chevy pickup head-on.

The crash partially blocked traffic on the highway near the Eugene Airport.

Police said that the two passengers of the tan truck were taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center with serious injuries.

The driver of the Toyota pickup, Patrick McGuirk, 50 of Eugene, is said to be in treatment for his serious injuries. McGuirk's passenger, David Rodney Thom, 45 of Eugene, died at the hospital.

Troopers said that the driver of the Chevy pickup, later identified as Gregory Garn, 46 of Eugene, was able to walk away from the crash uninjured.

Emergency crews partially closed off the highway for about two hours as emergency crews worked the scene.

Investigators from the state police force are still looking into the crash.
