POULSBO, Wash. -- Crystal Henrion says she and her best friend barely even had time to try to get out of the way when they were struck by a hit-and-run driver on Friday.
"It happened so fast," she said. "My best friend is sitting in a hospital right now, broken."
Henrion, 19, said she and Shelly Martin were walking down Pioneer Way in Poulsbo at about 7:30 p.m. when they heard a vehicle accelerating behind them.
"It just got really loud and fast and we didn't even have time to look back," she said. "I didn't think that we were going to get hit."
Henrion said the driver didn't slow down or even try to brake before slamming into her and Martin.
The driver took off, leaving the two injured women in a ditch along the side of the road.
"He just kept going. My hair was all in front of my face and I looked up and all I saw was the tail lights because he was that far away," she said.
Henrion pulled herself up and called 911 while Martin, who took the brunt of the impact, lay injured and unable to move her legs.
"She was crying to me 'get me out of here!'" Henrion said.
Martin was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with severe injuries.
On Sunday night Martin's mother, Carissa Martin, was at the hospital and said her daughter can't understand why the driver never stopped.
"She's said it many times, 'why would someone do this to me? Why would they hit me and leave me in a ditch and drive away?'"
Henrion was not seriously hurt but has bruises up and down the side of her body.
All she wants now is for the driver to be found.
"I just can't believe they didn't stop," she said.
Investigators do not have a good description of the vehicle but think it's a pickup truck.
If you have any information about a pickup with new or unexplained front-end damage, call police.

Is it just me or does this hit and run stuff seem to be increasing? Seems like I'm always hearing about that a lot lately. If I ever seen that happen and I caught the person I really don't know if I would let them ever make it home. especially if they've been drugging or drinking. Society seems to be getting more sick with each passing day. Time for the return of the vigilante. Did I spell that right? Â
In California the Hit and Run accounts for 50% of the reported accidents....yep, 50% of the total.
Think it may have something to do with the large population of illegals not wanting to stop and share their personal information after an accident??
@flor3nc3 Same situation in Colorado, not sure it is 50% but allot of hit and runs from Mexican population. I think it is more an insurance problem, allot of people do not carry it until the car has to be registered. Insurance rates vary from State to State - CA High, CO High - when I moved from Colorado my insurance when down by over $100 and I have never had an accident in 30 years...wow knock on wood. Very defensive driver - I sprout 2 extra sets of eyes while driving too many drivers out there that are...bad drivers and should not be on the road. I don't feel our driving test should be given in any other language than what our roads and information signs are written it. Does not make sense to me.
@colorowdy @flor3nc3 ---An accident seen is stressful enough without trying to calm/talk down the victim in a second language. I suspect that too acccounts for higher #s for the mexican pop. In Asia, I noticed a lot of victims of hit and runs were foreigners, and vice-versa. I must now admit that prejudice towards the mexican drivers in our country is justified. Hell, who am I trying to kid? When I lived in LA, every accident or hit n run I ever saw was the fault of a drunken Mexican. How soon I did forget. They even whack our police vacationing down there.
@flor3nc3 ---I think it has to do more with minimum coverage that most people have, that will never cover increased medical costs after whacking/mangling a pedestrian...so drivers are more apt to scurry off. Hit n run knows no racial/national bounderies whatsoever from my Gulliver's Travels. I  Never knew it was as high 50% in Californication. I can't Thank you enough for that statistic. I think i will opt more for the bus vs my bike and skateboard now...especially after that lady last weekend that got hatched in 6 hours after 4 hit n run priors PROIR to her dukes of hazard chase down. Â
I hope they catch the scum! Sounds almost like they did it on purpose!
@UsaidWHAT ---I remember as kids we would laugh and say, "10 points for that cat, 20 for that dog, 50 points for that old lady, etc. But, we were just joking. But, drunk drivers on meth is no joke. Make all the tweekers walk, and let all the sober drivers run them over---1 million points JACKPOT!
