Inmate work crew first on scene of accident

GRAND RONDE, Ore. - An inmate work crew witnessed a Jeep crash off an Oregon highway and down a steep bank into a creek.

The inmates and the sheriff's personnel supervising them went down to the creek in an attempt to help the two people and the dog in the 2004 Jeep Liberty after witnessinig the crash just after 11:10 a.m. on Highway 22, about a mile north of Highway 18.

The SUV hit a tree before coming to rest on its wheels in three feet of water.

The work crew was unable to free the victims from the wreckage.

West Valley Fire Department got the driver and her brother out of the rig. Their dog was not injured.

Both occupants were taken to the hosptial for treatment with injuries that were not expected to be life threatening.
