SALEM, Ore. - A local middle-school student who had a heart attack during basketball practice in January died after collapsing a second time this past Friday, officials said.
Salem firefighters responded to a playground behind Scott Elementary School in Northeast Salem around 6:30 p.m.
Witnesses said 12-year-old Isaac Arzate was in the field running during baseball practice when he suddenly started coughing up blood and collapsed.
Arzate also collapsed a few months ago while at school. At that time, doctors discovered that he had a heart defect and surgery was performed to correct the problem. Arzate spent more than a week in the hospital at the time but had a good prognosis.

We called Arzate's mother on Sunday to ask if he had been cleared to play little league and all she would tell us was that "he was OK."
Back in January, another boy, 14-year-old Cody Sherrell, was also hospitalized after he collapsed during basketball practice at La Center Elementary and Middle School in Washington state. A doctor said the teen had suffered a heart attack. Sherrell later died.
