'It's very exciting to see the community so interested'

EUGENE, Ore. - The South Eugene High School Cafeteria was packed with community members, everyone interested in what the city has in mind for South Willamette Street.
Eugene Public Works presented 6 different improvement alternatives.
Variables like bike lanes, wider sidewalks, the number of north- and southbound lanes and even business access is all still up in the air.
Project Manager Chris Henry says the turnout at the community forum was the largest he has ever seen for a street improvement project.
"This is impressive," says Henry, "It's very exciting to see the community so interested in determining the future of how the transportation system serves their need."
Feedback from the community forum held on February 27 will help narrow the 6 options down to 3.
Henry aded that they are also working with business owners and local police and fire departments to help with making the best decision possible.
Another forum will be held in May with a more detailed analysis of the top 3 improvement alternatives.
If they really are interested in the publics view, they would have read all the comments posted online to articles such as this one, when the story first was posted online. Not everyone has the time or ability to come to such public forums, and our voices should not be silenced because of that. In this case, there were many opinions both for and against the proposed actions that should be given thought to and consideration when making the final decision.
Now that news stories have the ability to allow the public to make comments via the web, each and every comment should be given a âvoiceâ in public conversations regarding the publicâs viewpoint and wishes.Â
That goes for all controversial or politically sensitive decisions that are being discussed for action by any entity that is paid for and working for the people: AKA Â ALL politicians.
@angelgabe Surely you know by now that public input is only done to comply with the law. There is nothing in the law that require these public officials to act in accordance with any majority. All these things should be noted, and placed at the next election so as not to cost any more for a special vote. If they had to refer all their nonsense ideas for vote there would be few anyway.
