SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Online classes through the Springfield School District start their second semester February 4.

The program is free of charge to students in the district from kindergarten through 12th grade.

A coordinator with the online program said the courses can be vigorous but also prepare students for the future.

"It's a new way of learning," said Jane Falls, online coordiantor for Springield schools. "People have to learn how to interact in a different way with both the material and the text book that are all online and with the teachers."

Falls said students can take all online courses or a combination of online and in-school classes.

Willamalane Parks and Recreation District is also offering weekly drop-in times for online student support. Live lessons and chat rooms provide other ways to interact with teachers and classmates.

"It works great for some students and families, not so great for others," Falls said. "Students have to be motivated. They have to be ready to put on a routine."

The district is hosting informational meetings this Thursday and Friday. To learn more, visit www.springfield.k12.or.us/spsonline.
