Lebanon man dies in snowmobile crash near Santiam Pass

BEND, Ore. — A Lebanon man died Saturday in a snowmobile crash near Hoodoo Ski Bowl on the Santiam Pass, the Linn County Sheriff's Office said.

Sheriff Bruce Riley said George Elmer Eichner, 67, of Lebanon was driving a snowmobile around the area with other members of a snowmobile club. He crashed into a tree at around 4 p.m., deputies reported.

Eichner was wearing a helmet, however paramedics said he suffered a severe head injury. He was pronounced dead at the scene about an hour after the crash.

Santiam Pass is a 4,817-foot mountain pass in the Cascade Range, about 45 miles northwest of Bend.

In a separate accident, a Portland man was rescued Saturday after a head-on snowmobile crash near the top of Moon Mountain near Bend. 43-year-old Mike Galvan was transported to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend with non-life threatening injuries.

Another snowmobile rider involved in the same crash was not injured.
