Letter Carriers Food Drive: 'It's become our biggest food drive'
EUGENE, Ore. -- Saturday marked the beginning of the Letter Carrier's Food Drive in Eugene.
For many local residents, this is the easiest way to participate in a drive during the holidays. Simply leave a bag of non-perishable food items by the mailbox, and the postal service will pick it up.
While the food drive has participants that span the country, all of the food donations picked up locally will go to Food For Lane County.
Alicia Hines, a spokeswoman for the non-profit, said that they depend on the donations taken in during the Letter Carrier's Food Drive.
"It's become our biggest food drive of the year," said Hines. "Between the Letter Carriers Drive in December and the one in May, we bring in 300 pounds of food a year."
Hines said that third on the organizations list of food drives is the spring scrimmage game at Autzen.
The Letter Carrier's Food Drive is scheduled for the next two weeks.

If it's so simple than why do most of us only do these things once twice, three days, a week, a year? We give to those a few days a year who have needs every single day! My question is "why don't we promote feeding, housing, and "doing" everyday?" Why is it we do these things and act as though we care only on certain days of the year? Because it makes us feel good, because it lessens the guilt we all feel for turning our backs on those who are in desperate need of food and housing every single day! Because many don't smell or look the way we would like them to. Many of these, children!
Â
Our own government sends billions abroad instead of feeding and housing those in our own backyard. Thousands of these are homeless veterans! After a war or after these veterans are of no use to the U.S. government they deny them and turn their backs on them as they have for decades!
Â
Many big name actors and actresses spend millions and millions of dollars overseas on people and functions for those who are disadvantaged when we have plenty of those disadvantaged right here in the USA!
Â
How in the world do we support other nations, and give moral or human rights advice when we haven't yet cleaned up our own backyards, and are immoral ourselves? Former president Bush created laws to allow the U.S. government to torture, to deny human rights of all people! Our constitution gives all people human rights, not just those whom the U.S. government decides gets them.
Â
The lame stream media uses the disadvantaged (Homelessness) a few days a year to benefit themselves. Everything they do is motivated by when they can get. Advertising revenue comes to mind. Otherwise they (media) would keep the plight of the homeless front and center in the news all year long, not just during the Holidays. But they won't, because reporting on the homeless simply isn't lucrative!
Â
Wake-up people, consider what you have could disappear in an instant, and you could be right where these homeless people are now! It's different looking up from the bottom and its not something you want to experience! I know, I was there!
Â
We are truly pathetic!
