Life term for 29-year-old thief who stole $60, cigarettes
EVERETT, Wash. (AP) - A 29-year-old man can expect to spend the rest of his life in prison after a Snohomish convenience store robbery that netted $60 and eight packs of cigarettes.
Keith Puett was sentenced Wednesday in Snohomish County Superior Court as a three-strikes offender.
The Daily Herald reports he had two previous convictions for assault and pleaded guilty to robbery for the armed hold-up last January.

He knew the risk involved. And still committed armed robbery. Life is a bit extreme for the crime. But he knew what the penalty would be. And why plead guilty with nothing to lose? Seems like he wanted the life sentence to me.
He should have moved to Lane county ..OK not funny!
I heard the cigarette brand was: "Lucky Strike"
That ain't right.Â
So you can drink and drive, kill someone with your car; you can rape children; your can commit murder and walk away (as long as you do it 2 times or less), but a pack of smokes and 60 bucks will get you life? Â Maybe the 3 strikes law needs to be revised? Â Jailing someone for life for something like this is a huge waste of tax money.
The for profit prison industrial complex pays bribes for tougher and tougher sentences for more and more petty crimes to keep thier gulags and sweatshops full.
YET WE HAVE PPL IN PRISON ON DEATH ROW THAT WE CAN'T GET RID OF.... HHHMMM OUR SYSTEM IS REALLY BACKWARDS.
Don't spend that money all in one place.
@Michael Michaels ---toilet wine and pole dancing to the jail house rock.
I hope he enjoyed the cigarettes. Meanwhile, someone just murdered someone and they will be out in five years.
@Michael Michaels Five years? More like five days if it's in Lane County.Â
@EugeneGuy @Michael Michaels --- five consecutive life day sentences.
Life for stealing $60? I think there might be something wrong with our justice system.
@mackenzie0158 ---well, he also stole about $50 worth of cigarettes. That's not exactly petty theft. I wonder if the cops smoked them up before they joined the gun in the evidence locker. Dam things are more expensive than the gun. I am just really ashamed of him for not just bagging 8 cartons and a couple cases of beer...if he was gonna' get life anyways. Poor guy, will spend the rest of his life
not smoking, wishing he had quit smoking, so he could still smoke. What a perpetual mind screw.Â
@mackenzie0158 Can you say armed robbery? And one of the previous strikes was with a knife and he beat the other guy with a club. Hows about we let him beat you with a club and then ask your opinion as to whether you want him locked up or not. While in jail, on the jail-monitored phone, he also threatened his girlfriend with assault if she didn't testify for him  with an alibi.
@hewhoo ---I just knew there was more to this story AND his back ground. On top of the 3 atrocious felonies, I am sure he has a rap sheet of DUIIs and misdemeanors a mile long. Actually 4 felonies, but the court/DA won't waste it's time over the spat with his girlfriend. OR she is too afraid to press charges. And, of course, how many dozens of times did this psychopath commit crimes and never got caught? Probably had a warrant for his arrest in other counties/states too. Should have got a life sentence W/O possibility of parole. He wil be out of jail sooner than headlines read.Â
@hewhoo None of those offensives warrant life in prison, nor do they collectively.Â
Use a gun in a crime and get this result...now That's what I call 'gun control'!
@hewhoo ---cigarettes don't kill people, people do
