RIDDLE, Ore. - An accident Monday morning killed a retired Douglas County Sheriff's Office captain and sent logs spilling onto the roadway on Pruner Road in Riddle.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said Robert Stratton, 72, of Riddle, died at the scene.

Stratton was driving a 2000 Ford F-350 pickup pulling a trailer on Riddle Bypass Road on Monday morning, the sheriff's office said.

Kathy Taylor, 56, of Riddle, was driving a 1997 Plymouth Neon 4-door. Her car hit Stratton's truck on the driver side, the sheriff's office said.

Stratton's truck slid into the path of an oncoming log truck being driven by Allan Stout, 64, of Grants Pass, which struck Stratton's vehicle on the passenger side.

The impact caused major damage to Stratton's vehicle and the 1972 General log truck.

Stratton worked for 29 years at the Sheriff's Office before retiring in 2001 at the rank of Captain.

"Captain Robert Stratton was a dedicated law enforcement professional who served Douglas County with dedication and pride," said Sheriff John Hanlin. "Captain Stratton was a mentor and friend to many of us who still work here at the Sheriff's Office and he will be greatly missed."
