Bike Friday builds bicycles in Eugene - and exports most of them beyond Oregon.

EUGENE, Ore. - The bicycles running the generators at the Los Cabos Green Fest in Mexico later this month were made in Eugene.

Bike Friday manufactured the bikes Pedal Power Music will use to produce power for the lights and sound system at the spring break gig south of the border.

The international exposure isn't new for the local bike builder: Bike Friday has bike dealers in 24 countries and customers in about 50.

About 95 percent of the bikes the company makes are exported outside of Oregon, said Allan Scholz, co-founder of Bike Friday.

But the bikes, which fold up and fit in a suitcase, have found another audience here in Eugene: school children.

The Eugene 4J School District uses Bike Friday folding bikes for the Safe Routes to School Program.

They aren't cheap: student models start at $500.

The Eugene school's program has attracted attention from other school districts in New York, California, Idaho and Montana, the company said.
