CANYONVILLE, Ore. -- Authorities are reporting that a man died shortly after being taken into custody by deputies, and the case is being investigated by the Douglas County Major Crimes Team.

Sheriff's deputies contacted Walter Ray McKelvey, 26, just before 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, at the Ray's Market in Canyonville.

Authorities say McKelvey was acting erratic and began to run in front of traffic.

As Deputies tried to take the man into custody, he reportedly struggled with deputies.

Investigators say that McKelvey experienced an unknown medical emergency shortly afterwards.

The investigation into his death is being handled by the Major Crimes Team, with the Roseburg Police Department being the lead agency.

The Douglas County Major Crimes Team is an interagency team comprised of members of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Oregon State Police, Roseburg Police Department and the Douglas County District Attorneys Office.
