Man accused of sexually abusing young girls
EUGENE, Ore. - Police arrested a University of Oregon employee on campus Thursday on charges accusing him of sexually abusing at least 3 girls between the ages of 6 and 12.
None of the alleged crimes involved the university in any way, police said.
But the UO Police Department assisted Eugene Police in taking Russell Gene Crummett, 49, into custody on campus.
Crummett faces multiple counts of first degree sex abuse, first degree sodomy and first degree unlawful sexual penetration.
Police said the victims were not family members but were acquainted with Crummett.
KVAL's Kristina Nelson went to the apartment complex where Crummett lived to ask what they thought about the arrest. Neighbors said that he seemed like a nice guy, but they weren't necessarily surprised to learn that he was taken into custody.
Wendie Rainbow said that her son often played with Crummett's children at their apartment when they first moved to the neighborhood.
"I had a feeling this was going to happen," Rainbow said. "My son witnessed him in bed with a little girl."
Wendie Rainbow added that she regrets not acting on what her son had told her happened while he was playing with his friends at Crummett's apartment.
The suspect, a building manager with the UO's College of Education, has been placed on administrative leave, the University said.
The UO said that Crummett had access to College of Education facilities, however his position did not include interaction with children.
University spokesperson Phil Weiler said that, while the school does background checks on people hired for these positions, Crummett's record was never checked.
"When this gentlemen was hired we had not operationalized those background checks so there was not a check done of him." Weiler said.
Patty Perlow at the Lane County District Attorney's Office told KVAL that Crummett has prior misdemeanor convictions, but nothing sexual that the DA's office knows about.
Officials said that Crummett was arraigned on 7 counts of sex abuse, 6 counts of sodomy and 4 counts of unlawful sexual penetration. Crummett has a court date scheduled for December 10th.
Investigators ask anyone with relevant information in this case to call Eugene Police Violent Crimes Detective Ralph Burks at (541) 682-5166.

@countrygirl90 Are you for real? He did "a really bad thing"?!? Frankly I don't think anyone is giving this man any pity for what "HE must be going through" Can you put yourself in the place of those little girls who's bodies and souls he so grotesquely violated? Their lives will never, ever be the same. In my eyes he is a murderer as he has killed the people they could have and should have become. I too hope the facts come out in court so that he gets the maximum he deserves. But, I sincerely hope they don't become public. I don't think I could stomach it. He is a disgraceful man and will never be "forgiven by GOD" for what he has done. There are special places reserved for people such as he!
Just cut it off.
PLEASE tell me why that woman didn't report her knowledge of him being in bed with a young girl.. good lord. She's JUST as guilty! That could have easily been her son in that situation too.. disgusts me.
Wow. What a POS. And The woman interviewed said her son SAW him in bed with a young girl and she did not report it? She is just as culpable in my book. Why some adults (Citizenzuo below is a great example) choose to turn a blind eye, make excuses for and even defend this behavior completely baffles me. It is just outraging. How anyone involved in this can look themselves in the mirror after this is a mystery to me. I hope these children will get the therapy, support and love they will undoubtedly need. So very sad.
It would be easy if this was just someone you didn't know and could judge by a mug shot and news article. Fact is, many people in the community know and appreciate Russ for being a sincere nice guy. Unfortunately reality is not one dimensional and this tragedy has far ranging consequences. For those of us that know him this is a lesson in letting justice take it's course- no trial by media. We'll just have to sit back and hope the facts come out. Very sad for lots of people in the Eugene community.
@citizenzuo thanks for sticking up for russ i know its a shock to everyone and its not only affecting him but his family also and i would like it if these people would stop! bashing him i am his sister he married my older sister and it brakes my heart to see poeple talking about him yes he did a really really bad thing but hes a son of god and he will be forgiven by god

@countrygirl90  @citizenzuo countrygirl90, it's best to keep your religion out of this situation.  I don't know if you'd be taking the same stance had one of your children been penetrated by this very sick man.  Maybe as a family member you could have helped him with his sickness by being more observant to his tendencies.  Unfortunately pedophiles are not commonly recognized until they turn into child molesters, like this man.  But my sensitivities do not lie with the man in question.  My heart and empathy are with the children who are affected by these acts.  They will have to endure this for the rest of their lives, because one very sick person wasn't courageous enough to seek help, but instead made the choice to act on his sickness.  Those kids deserve recognition as being brave enough to tell someone and to take action to get this man the justice that he deserves. Â
@countrygirl90Â Â We all have our ways of coping.
@citizenzuo People judge off the best facts they have at the time. It's human nature.
Looks like uncle Pervy...What a POS!
Puke!
What a scum bag. What is it with these predators see in young children? I don't get it.

I'm unemployed, can I have his U of O building manager job now? I'd take half of what he's getting.
