Man found guilty for murder of 2-year-old

ROSEBURG, Ore. -- A Douglas County Judge has found Mark Vanderhoof, 53, guilty of the murder of a 2-year-old boy in 2011.

Judge Ronald Poole ruled on Tuesday morning that Vanderhoof was guilty of 'Murder by Abuse.'

Vanderhoof was charged by authorities with four counts of murder. The charges stem from the death of 2-year-old Dennis James Young, who died from severe head injuries in January 2011.

Prosecutors said Vanderhoof beat the boy so severely that he had to be transported to a Portland hospital in critical condition.

He was found guilty of counts three and four, for recklessly causing the death of a child with extreme indifference for human life.

Prosecutor Kathleen Johnson said, "Justice is served for counts three and four, to the extent justice can be served."

Judge Poole felt there was insufficient evidence to prove Vanderhoof guilty of count two. The judge found his conduct reckless, but made an acquittal on count two because he didn't believe there was sufficient evidence Vanderhoof intended to hurt the child.
