Man gets 6 years for downtown bank robbery

EUGENE, Ore. - A man who robbed a downtown bank last summer dressed in a polo shirt and khaki shorts will serve almost 6 years in federal prison - a month for every $18 he stole.

Judge Ann Aiken sentenced Ryan Lee Hayes, 26, on Tuesday to 71 months in prison.

Hayes walked into the Wells Fargo Bank on Broadway Avenue during the lunch hour on July 30, 2012, and handed the teller a note demanding money.

He left the bank with $1,300 cash.

A security camera captured images of the suspect. Hayes was later apprehended and charged.

He has also been linked to a string of thefts downtown at businesses like REI and Hutch's Bicycle Shop, prosecutors said.

Those charges are still pending in circuit court.
