Man stabbed six times near downtown Eugene bars
EUGENE, Ore. -- A man was stabbed six times at around midnight Friday during a fight downtown, Eugene Police said.
The man, Matthew John Smith, 29, is reported to be in stable condition at Sacred Heart at Riverbend in Springfield.
At around midnight Friday Eugene Police responded to a stabbing reported near the intersection of W Broadway and Olive Streets, close to multiple bars in downtown Eugene.
Police arrived to find Smith bleeding from six stab wounds inflicted during a fight near the intersection.
Sergeant Kyle Williams with the Eugene Police Department told Oregon News Lab reporter Joseph Stefan that Smith was in a fight with one other person.
“I don’t know what the reason for the altercation was. They were in some sort of argument," said Sgt. Williams. “We have some investigative leads that we’re following up on currently. We do not have anyone in custody and we’re not releasing any names at this point."
He was taken to Sacred Heart and treated for the significant, yet non-life threatening injuries.
Anyone with information about the stabbing is asked to call Eugene Police at 541-682-5111.
Crime rate in Eugene is only going to go UP with the way thay run this town.

@IAMHIGH Judging from your grammar I'm willing to be you make under $15,000.00 and have little or no tax burden.
@RelaxThereIsNoGod @IAMHIGH ---gosh golly gentle(wo)men. no need to get into a fist fight over pedantics and socio-economic status.
I admire your comments regardless of both. In the mean time, could either of you tell me how to employ a spellcheck function on these threads? After a day/night at the bar, my spelling becomes etrocius!
@peace You sir /mam are funny ..thanks for the laugh and my spelling has and

Went to school just like you and stood and fought for my Country and get to do what I what just like you. funny how freedom works like that. you say something
I say something back blah, blah ,blah and so on. School doesn't make good neighbors good people do just glad I don't live in yours.
@IAMHIGH So you're a retired Government employee on a Government pension, complaining that some percent of that money goes back to the Government in taxes? And some of that money gets spent on things you don't like? You may not have considered this, but a lot of Americans are against spending money on the Army. I suspect you didn't ask any of them for permission to spend their taxes before you cashed your paycheck. So you're really not in a position to complain.
Â
It is never too late to go back to school, you can even spend some of my tax dollars by getting grants at LCC if you'd like. :)

I don't mind, after all I will be better off with educated neighbors.
Franklyspeaking, for what it's worth, city tax dollars do not fund "jailers," it does however fund police. The jail, is the responsibility of the County Sheriff, per the Oregon Constitution, and thusly funded by County tax dollars (which are few). The piles of money the City of Eugene wastes daily has nothing to do with jail funding. A municipal lock-up (often referred to as a muni jail) would be funded my city/municipal funds, however Eugene does not have one. The City of Eugene rents beds at the County Jail, but they are relatively few, and are reserved for low level municipal offenses (not joking, violation of  park rules, and other municipal offenses.). So even if the City magically stopped wasting huge sums of money, it would not benefit our broken public safety system (Jail, DA's Office, Juv Justice, etc.) as the majority of the broken system is funded by County tax revenue (again per the State Constitution), which are very low.
Testimony to the fact Eugene needs new leadership. I'm not saying I don't like our city counsel, I'm saying they don't know what they are doing. First of all, now they are wanting to tax the property owners with their own idea of a fee of which everybody already knows it's a tax. And then they turn Eugene into a haven for every derelict on the West coast, costing us needed funding to pay for our police and jailers. Something is wrong here in Eugene.
@Franklyspeaking Step one, learn about local civics and learn what the different parts of Government are and what they do.
Â
When you don't even know which levels of Government do which jobs, it makes it hard to take seriously your guesses about the results of various potential actions.
Â
As for local property taxes, we regularly vote on such matters and we have high turnout and the local people are in control of their taxes and services. So there is really no cause for cynicism. If some tax is imposed that we don't like, we'll just repeal it. The local government does polls and they're not going to pass anything that is going to get repealed.
Â
BTW Portland already has a "dignity village" and hasn't become a "haven for every derelict on the West Coast." And if that was actually the result of compassion, we'd be safe because they'd still go right past us on up to Portland. But did you consider, it is not our place to judge our neighbors and where they choose to live. They are Free and are Americans the same as you and I. Maybe some would choose a "derelict" before they would choose those who would openly hate them, openly look down on and insult the weak of spirit.
There is rarely anything good that's going to occur at or around midnight when leaving a bar.
@flor3nc3 If you visit downtown at night, you'll see lots of happy people stumbling along behind their designated driver, getting into taxis, laughing and discussing where to eat, whooping and hollering and having a good time.
Â
If you're sure nothing good would happen in that place, at that time, you will never go to that place at that time... unless you are up to no good. And so you'll never see different for yourself. But I encourage you, if you find yourself in downtown Eugene at night, take a short moment to notice the happy people doing happy things. :)
@flor3nc3 Especially downtown in the Barmuda Triangle!
