Names released in fatal Hwy 101 crash
WALDPORT, Ore. -- Oregon State Police have released the names of the two women who were killed in a crash north of Waldport on Highway 101 Sunday morning.
Emergency crews were called out to the crash about 3.5 miles north of Waldport at around 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
Police said that a Dodge Ram truck driven by Spencer Foley, 23 of Toledo, was headed south towing a flatbed trailer with a Polaris off-road vehicle on board.
At around milepost 152 the trailer started to fishtail back and forth. Eventually it broke free of the truck and went into the northbound lane.
The trailer hit the side of a Toyota Sienna van carrying two women, police said. The off-road vehicle left the trailer and hit the van as well.
The two women found deceased at the scene were identified Suzanne Carol Aiken, 69, and her mother, Loise A. Raether, 94, both of Yachats, Ore.
Troopers say both women were wearing seat belts and the airbags in the van did deploy.
Hwy 101 was blocked for about four hours while authorities investigated the crash.
Sad. I am a women & know how to tow a trailer right to stop it from fishtailing. It's called commen sence people. R.i.p to the women who lost there lives due to dummies.
@Coosbayresident Sorry if this offends you but I really don't like one person calling another person a dummy due to an accident, especially when the name caller only reads about the incident and does not have all the details. Incidentally, most of us call it COMMON SENSE. Common sense demands that you use proper spelling and punctuation when criticizing others.  Is important to show that you have a good grasp on what intelligence is if you are trying to get others to agree with your points. I also feel for the loss of THEIR lives.Â
@ethicsmatter @Coosbayresident Mechanical failure or improper tire pressure might cause fishtailing of a trailer, but usually the cause is more load weight on the rear half of the trailer. Proper load distribution on a trailer requires more weight on the front half of the trailer than on the rear half. Proper distribution of load weight is definitely important. I hope this wasn't the problem in this accident which caused a sad loss of lives.
