New disc golf course open at Eugene park

EUGENE, Ore. - A new 18-hole disc golf course is now open at Alton Baker Park.

"I feel great. I'm kind of pitter patter like a little kid again," said Andrew Rich, the contractor operating the course for the city. "To come out here and to watch it all come together and to have the whole Chamber here, it's really making it bigger than my idea."

Rich said the course will soon be accompanied by a snack bar, pro shop and bathroom.

"I'm really excited to have the layout in town," he said. "You don't need to drive to the lake or down to Cottage Grove now. You have somewhere you can walk or bike to."

Even if you've never played before, Rich and Eugene Disc Golf hope the new course can get people more interested in the sport.

The course operators plan to charge a $3 walk-up fee. Year memberships will cost $50. The money will help maintain the course.

Disc golfers said they can't get enough of the game.

"I love it, I love it," Cloud Pemble said. "It's my number one hobby, and probably the number one thing I talk about."

On Saturday, March 30, local disc golfers will compete on the course in the finale tournament of the Willamette Valley Winter Series.

Wednesday was a soft opening for the course. The new disc golf course in Alton Baker Park officially opens April 1.
