No. 2 Sheldon takes on No. 12 South Medford
Sheldon H.S. football head coach Lane Johnson

EUGENE, Ore. - The Sheldon High School football team lost the state title last year in a heartbreaker to Lake Oswego, 47-14.

This season, the Sheldon Irish coached by Lane Johnson are ranked 2nd in state and 214th nationally.

So far in the 2012 season, an undefeated Sheldon team has 4 wins under their belt thus far, averaging 4 touchdowns more than their opponents per game.

Next up: South Medford High School.

“Close game," Johnson predicted. "South Medford has a great defense.”

South Medford's defense held South Eugene scoreless in a lopsided 52-0 game, and also defeated Westview 34-0. South Medford is currently 3-1, with their only upset loss to Thurston by a score of 20-7. South Medford has defeated their opponents by an average of 34 points.

South Medford is currently ranked 12th in state and is expected to put up a tough fight.

“Our boys have been practicing really hard,” Johnson said.

Downplaying expectations, Coach Johnson said that though this game is important to him and his players, he’s mostly looking forward to “enjoying the football evening game with [his] guys.”

Johnson and Sheldon High School play South Medford on Friday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. in Medford.
