CAVE JUNCTION, Ore. -- Two men fighting in the middle of the road got hit and killed by a pickup truck early Wednesday morning, Oregon State Police said.
Just after midnight, state police got a report that two people were struck by a vehicle in the 27000 block of Highway 199 near milepost 30 south of Cave Junction.
When emergency responders arrived, they found two men dead and the vehicle that hit them had left the scene.
State police say Jarred Quinn Houston, 21, of Cave Junction, had stopped on the shoulder of the highway due to a possible mechanical problem.
While he was there, police say Robert Rob Calvin, 41, of Cave Junction was walking in the area with a woman.
The two men started arguing and then started fighting in the roadway, officials said.
As they were fighting in the southbound lane, they were struck by a vehicle that left the scene southbound without stopping.
The suspect vehicle is described as light colored, possibly beige or tan, 1980s style single cab Toyota pickup with matching color canopy and front end damage.
State police have notified law enforcement agencies in northern California and southern Oregon to be on the lookout for the unidentified suspect vehicle and driver. Anyone with information to help in this investigation is asked to call OSP Southern Command Center dispatch at (541) 776-6111.
Highway 199 was closed in both directions for over 4 hours.
OSP Criminal Investigations Division and Patrol Services Division are involved in the ongoing investigation. OSP was assisted at the scene by Illinois Valley Fire District and ODOT.
