GRANTS PASS, Ore. -- One person is dead and another is injured after an SUV left the roadway on Highway 199 Friday evening, Oregon State Police said.
A Mazda SUV driven by Grants Pass resident Joshua Bartley, 21, was headed northbound on Highway 199 Friday evening with Sharon Hoppe-Bullis, a 65-year-old Brookings resident, riding as a passenger.
At about 8:20 p.m. the SUV traveled off the right side of the highway and collided with a tree near milepost 40. Investigators are still looking into what caused the car to leave the roadway.
Hoppe-Bullis was pronounced dead at the scene, Bartley was taken to Three Rivers Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
While both passengers were wearing safety belts, Hoppe-Bullis had the shoulder harness portion tucked underneath her.
Traffic was down to one lane in the area around the crash for nearly four hours while investigators and emergency crews worked the crash site.
