SCAPPOOSE, Ore. – One man died and another was seriously hurt in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 30 south of Scappoose Tuesday afternoon, state police said.

The crash occurred at around 12:30 p.m.

State police said 39-year-old Mark Thomas of Oregon City was driving a Mazda SUV westbound on the highway when the vehicle crossed the center paved median and struck the side of a Buick Century heading eastbound. It's unclear what caused the SUV to cross the center line.

The two vehicles ended up hundreds of feet apart after the crash.

The driver of the Buick, 65-year-old Wayne McCormick of Scappoose, died at the scene, police said.

Thomas was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to a Portland hospital.

There were no passengers in either vehicle. Police said both drivers were wearing seat belts and airbags deployed in both vehicles.

The Oregon Department of Transportation reopened Highway 30 late Tuesday afternoon.
