Oregon campus suffers a spike in vandalism

EUGENE, Ore. - Vandals caused more dollars in damage to the University of Oregon campus in 6 months than they did the previous entire pervious year.

Between July 2010 and July 2011, the campus had 162 acts of vandalism that cost $17,000 in labor and materials to repair.

From July 2011 until now, an estimated 200 vandalism calls had taken a $25,000 toll to the campus.

Debbie Cadigan with the UO said the vandalism is spread all over campus and not concentrated one particular area.

Damage this year has included graffiti, both inside and outside of buildings; retaining walls being kicked over; a car crashing into a light pole; tire marks on grassy fields; windows being broken; stairwells vandalized; and the bathrooms in Agate Hall scratched up with a sharp object, like a key.

Cadigan said campus officials don't have a theory as to why this is happening. Nor do they think it's just students doing the damage.
