Headstone now marks Oregon grave of Union veteran
MERLIN, Ore. (AP) — Descendants of a Civil War veteran and others have placed a marble headstone in a Southern Oregon graveyard in honor of Ezekiel Colby, who fought in dozens of battles, including Gettysburg.
The Grants Pass Daily Courier reports it's part of a national effort to make sure the graves of all veterans are marked.
Colby fought for the Union Army and returned to Indiana. He moved to Oregon about 1890 and was buried at Pleasant Valley Cemetery near Grants Pass.
His grave has long been unmarked — in fact, its precise location isn't known.
The new 200-pound marker was secured with help from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
A memorial service was held last weekend in the rain, punctuated by three volleys of gunfire from the Cascade Civil War Society.
