Update

EUGENE, Ore. - It is a record.

And it's not just cold: it's just shy of the coldest.

The temperature fell to -7 degrees F just after 11 p.m. Saturday next, besting the record low of -6 set on December 7, 1972.

The mercury kept on going overnight, hitting -10 early Sunday morning. That's short of a record - December 8, 1972, saw -12 F, the all-time coldest temperature on record for Eugene.

But 10 below zero is the second coldest temperature for Eugene since record keeping started in the 1890s.

EUGENE, Ore. -- Forecasters predict that Oregon will see its coldest night in over 40 years as many cities are still reeling from Friday’s snowstorm that dumped over a foot of snow across the southern Willamette Valley.

The day of snow made for slick driving conditions in Oregon and southwest Washington. While the precipitation is considered over, officials say an extreme cold snap will set in.

The National Weather Service said the potentially record-setting low temperatures will move into the region Saturday night, and will be made worse by wind and clear skies. In their special weather statement, officials said "this will be the coldest night since 1972."

Forecasters predict thermometers will drop into the single-digits overnight in areas still covered with snow like Eugene and Corvallis. Daytime highs will only make it to the upper 20s and low 30s.

The weather service says that people should dress in adequate clothing and minimize exposure if they plan to be outside.

The Egan Warming Centers are expected to stay open through Monday, giving homeless people a safe place to escape the cold.

Officials also ask that everyone’s pets or livestock have a warm, dry shelter with food and fresh, unfrozen water.
