EUGENE, Ore. - Runners and walkers braved the chilly Thanksgiving morning to participate in the third annual Turkey Trot & Turkey Drive.
The race, which started at Skinner Butte in Eugene, is a fundraiser for Food for Lane County and St. Vincent de Paul.
"Five dollars from every registration comes to support Food for Lane County and St. Vincent de Paul so especially as this race is growing, it's become bigger and bigger for us," said Alicia Hines with Food for Lane County.
The third annual run and walk brought out over 1,000 participants this year, a number that Hines said has seen considerable growth since it's the innagural trot.
"It's a win, win. It's something good for the participants getting out here, being actively involved in giving back. And then we are so grateful to have this kind of outpouring of support," said Hines. "I know it's fun for people but there is something good in it for Food for Lane County."
She said with so many people seeking their assistance in Lane County, events like this help keep their operations going.
"Currently 39 percent of the population in Lane County is eligible for food assistance so that's a lot of mouths to feed," she said. "So this race is really a big help."
