Overpass rock victim: 'It's really a miracle'
EUGENE, Ore. - Two University of Oregon athletes are home recovering after a rock hit their windshield when driving under an overpass near Rice Hill.
UO track athletes Molly Grabill and Chris Brewer were traveling on Interstate 5 near milepost 146 when a rock smashed onto their car and hit Grabill in the face.
Her passenger, Chris Brewer, who is also a UO track athlete, grabbed the wheel and tried to control the vehicle.
He was unable to keep it under control as the vehicle traveled onto the shoulder and rolled on the freeway coming to rest facing the opposite direction.
In a statement on Wednesday Brewer said, “I am just thankful that Molly and I are alright. It’s really a miracle.“
Drivers in the area are now somewhat concerned about driving under overpasses.
"Now I'm starting to get nervous when there's pedestrians up there," said Diane Hand, a resident of Roseburg.
"I really haven't noticed anybody so that's kind of scary in itself, to not be able to see what's coming," said Luke Scruggs, an Oregon City resident.
According to the Oregon Department of Transportation, the overpass near 146 is fenced like many others in the state.
However, spokesman Rick Little said some overpasses have higher priority than others to get funding and several are still not fenced yet.
"I think the key here is that we build them to the best available standards to deter people from throwing," Little said. "You can't prevent it but you can certainly deter it."
Oregon State Police are still investigating how the rock struck their vehicle.
If you have any information, you are urged to call Detective Tom Willis at (541) 440-3334 or the OSP Southern Command Center dispatch at (541) 440-3333.

That would make one see things upsid-down and backwards for quite a while. Lets give those 2 UO kids all of our support, Let's focus on the victims AND then extract revenge later: dangle and dip the little dipshits heads from that very bridge bungie jump cable everytime a TRUCKER TRACTOR TRAILER must scrape the eaves of that bridge.
For all the HELLS ANGELS turned trucker...CB them and get them on board for the INITIATION & PUNISHMENT!!!
When I was a punk, my South Park-like ilk would put a spent X-mas tree in the midldle of the road on a busy BLVD in LA, just to giggle and watch cars swerve around it...until some driver slamed on the brakes so hard that he almost caused a nasty pile up. After that, we put the X-mas tree back in the garbage.
Worse horror story was an elder's neighborhood in suburban LA, whose kids would put a giant box in the middle of the road to make cars swerve around it. All cars swerved until 1 car did not. Neighbor got tired of the swerve game and mowed it down at high speed,,,,with a child hiding in it on a DARE from Eric Catman. BOYZ will B BOYZ until they kill somebody. To bad all the JV Halls R all full. I always remember what Mark Twain said about putting a 13 year-old in barrel...until they turn 16...then we must seal the breath hole when they turn 16.
Police officer of Roseburg, told me a couple years ago about punks launching spark plugs off/near over passes, after my passenger side window got blown out while parked in front of my house. Launching rocks off of an overpass is terrorism, given the assistance of gravity and high speed vehicles. Thank God, their were no children involved. Yet, young college students, just trying to return from Thanksgiving are too young for such trauma.
Perhaps there is redeeming value and satisfaction in hoping that the punks who did this will have a million miles of nightmares AND nothing but rocks in their stockings for X-mas.
two foot  long one inch thick solid steel pipe came off truck near construction zone on Willamette last summer. It pinged end to end like a dancing stick 3-4 feet off the road surface. It missed. Another one last year was a piece of flat stock steel about 2 ft by 4 ft came loose from under side of big rig right in front of us. Missed.  The rock more than likely came from the roadway somehow.
Some kids parents ought to be held accountable for their child's misbehavior. My guess is that it's a twelve yo that lives within a half mile of the bridge and now he can't cross the bridge anymore cause he knows we're all lookin' up.
Punk better hope that the cops find him before I do. That's just some sick sh@# to do for no reason. Hell, even if you did have a reason that some sick sh@#. I'd have to run him over and then back up and to one more time for good measure.
@RougeCoyote  Amen to THAT, Coyote!  Next, this bastard will be showing up in a movie theater with an AK-47!  As long as the rest of society tolerates this behavior, it only gonna get worse!
