EUGENE, Ore. -- A pedestrian died after he was hit by a pickup just after noon on Saturday while crossing River Road, Eugene Police said.
Officials at the scene said the victim, 80-year-old Randall Elroy Haugen, was not crossing in a crosswalk.
Officers closed down the southbound lanes of River Road near the intersection of Irving Road just after noon on Saturday to investigate the crash. One northbound lane was also closed, officials said.
Paramedics tried reviving Haugen, but police said he died at the scene.
"He was crossing River Road just north of (the intersection) near Walgreen's. He was struck by a southbound, full size pickup truck and was pronounced dead at the scene," said Eugene Police Sgt. Ron Tinseth.
The driver of the pickup, a 69-year-old Anna Mary Kendall, was cooperating with police. Officials said impairment was not a factor in the crash.
Emergency crews rerouted southbound traffic onto Ferndale Road. Officials were asking drivers to avoid the area as police investigated the crash.
