Police: Car fleeing police crashes through locked park gate

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - A driver sped away from police early Friday morning, crashing his car through a locked gate at a public park before ditching the car and running away on foot.

A police dog tracked down the driver and his passenger.

The driver - identified as 30-year-old RC Huglen - faces charges of DUII, Reckless Driving, Reckless Endangering, Hit & Run, Attempt to Elude in a Vehicle, Attempt to Elude on Foot, Criminal Mischief I and Criminal Trespass II.

The chases started when a Springfield Police officer on patrol watching for DUII drivers spotted a car driving with no headlights. The officer saw the car run stop signs, weave into oncoming traffic, and turn its lights on and off.

When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, it sped off and crashed through a locked gate at a Willamalane park. The driver and his passenger ditched the car and ran away on foot before being apprehended a short time later.

Police said they found a shotgun in the car.
