Police: Eugene man dead after crashing into a tree

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- A 79-year-old man was pronounced dead on the scene Sunday morning after his car drove off of Glenwood Blvd. and ran into a tree, Springfield Police said.
John Wayne Hooton of Eugene was driving his white 1987 Cadillac north on Glenwood Boulevard. Witnesses told SPD officers that the Cadillac left the roadway at the 1600 block and hit a tree at around 9 a.m. for unexplained reasons.
Officials ruled that speed played a factor in the crash.
