Police: Intoxicated men claim driver walked away from crash

NEWPORT, Ore. -- Two drunk men involved in a crash off Highway 20 Friday night told troopers that the car's driver walked away from the wreck before emergency crews arrived on-scene, state police said.

Police responded to the crash at around 10:20 p.m. Friday after learning that a car had crashed down an embankment along Hwy 20 near Newport.

They reported finding Juan Carlos Zaragosa, 21, of Keizer, and Daniel Warner, 27, of Salem inside of a Mercury Cougar.

Both men were intoxicated and said they left a party in the nearby Siletz area with a third man who was driving. The men said they didn't know the man's name and insisted the driver walked away from the scene before witnesses or emergency responders arrived, officials said.

The witness that reported the crash said they hadn't seen any pedestrians in the area.

The men were taken to a Newport hospital for an evaluation of possible injuries. While at the hospital police found that Zaragosa had a misdemeanor warrant for Harassment out of Marion County. Newport Police said Zaragosa became combative; he was lodged at the Lincoln County Jail.

Warner left the hospital without any confirmed injury.

Anyone with information regarding this investigation to identify the driver is asked to call OSP Newport Area Command office at (541) 265-5354.
