Police: Man dead after walking in front of semi

COOS BAY, Ore. -- A Coos Bay area resident is dead after police say he walked in front of a semi truck and was hit Thursday night.

At about 10:30 pm, police were called to the scene at Highway 101 near Johnson Avenue in Coos Bay for a report that a pedestrian had been struck by a big rig.

Officers from the Coos Bay Police Department and Bay Cities Ambulance responded and found Donald Darwin Johnson, 55, of Coos Bay, lying deceased in the roadway.

Witnesses told police that Johnson walked into the path of vehicles traveling south on Hwy 101.

Police say two vehicles were able to avoid hitting Johnson, but a semi was not able to stop or move in time.

The driver of the truck was identified as Rene Hibbs, 52, of Coos Bay.

Hibbs was not injured in the crash.

Police say Hibbs stayed on the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

Authorities say Hibbs is not facing any charges in the incident.
