Police: Man shooting birds triggers school lockdown

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Gunshots audible at a city park and public school prompted a lockdown Thursday morning.

The lockdown was lifted after police located a man on private property outside the city limits who said he'd been shooting birds.

The lockdown lasted 17 minutes.

Employees at both Willamalane's SPLASH! Lively Swim Park and Thurston Middle School reported the gunshots to police.

The Thurston High School resource officer, who was visiting middle school on unrelated business, put the school into lockdown while officers investigated, police said.

Officers located a man on nearby private property, just outside of the city limits, who said he had been shooting birds.

Police said the incident will be "legally reviewed."
