Police: Man shoots himself in the leg at Internet cafe

EUGENE, Ore. -- A Eugene man accidentally shot himself in the leg with a holstered gun Thursday afternoon while he was in the bathroom of a downtown Internet cafe, police said.
Officials with Eugene Police said that the 26-year-old was using the restroom at Indra's Internet Lounge at 271 W 8th Ave when handgun holstered to his leg went off, hitting him in the thigh.
The owner of Indra's Internet Lounge, James Sherburne, told KVAL News that he immediately called police. He said that soon after the shot was fired the man crawled out of the bathroom.
Indra's employees helped get a tourniquet on his leg to stop the bleeding until emergency crews arrived, said Sherburne.
Police officials said that they didn't issue charges in the incident. They added that the man's name will not be released.
Sherburne told KVAL that the man, a regular at the cafe, was familiar with guns and that the shooting was truly accidental.
He discharged a firearm in a public place and does NOT get charged? What's up with that? Wait does he have friends in high places? Is he a cop?Â
Let's leave ALL emotion out of this conversation-just the FACTS. Fact is when someone is SHOT over 90% of the time they A) know their shooter and B) the gun either belongs to them or a loved one. Â Fact.Â
It is strange the way it is being reported maybe a police officer or someone else of importance.
No charges issued? The gun lovers are always saying "Just enforce the laws that are already on the books." Evidently there is no law against having your gun go off in a public place and endangering others. Think I'll be spending my tourist dollars outside of Eugene, OR.
@Sister123 ---kinda' reminds me of those wild wild west shows, where all is forgiven cuz nobody was shot. NOT! In the 21st century I would only expect that he shocked his gonads by mistake with his phaser put on stun.
You never know when some crazed gunman is going to storm internet cafes and shoot innocent people. If only I had a gun to stop such lunatics, oh wait, never mind.....
@calmplexx ---vladimer putin had an incident at a movie theatre 10 years ago, his KGB used to bees shot in/stung with sleeping gas. Both the audience and the terrorists went to sleep just so as they could arrest the gunmen that went to sleep too. Audience woke up an hour later (with a rain check) with a bad hangover and all was well. true Story. GOD I LOVE GOD PUTIN!
Maybe this guy isn't the best candidate for a gun permit!
@Michael Michaels ---few of them are.
@Michael Michaels I understand that in Eugene, OR you do't need a permit to openly carry.
@Sister123  @Michael Michaels If it was on his leg I doubt it was open carry .... Read....
@Postone  @Michael Michaels In another story on this subject in this same paper it says "The man was openly carrying his gun in a holster on his leg, which is legal, a police spokeswoman said".Â
Probably comments at KVAL...
This gun nut was openly carrying his handgun in public, just like the gun lobby suggests people do. Â It's a miracle no one else was hit or killed. Â This is a very good reason why carrying guns in public is a mistake.
@Baldr Odinson Not really, it would have saved lives at the Portland Mall.  The guy with a CHL ran towards the gun fire and said he would have fired, but couldn't clear his background. A smart and brave man, whom I salute.Â
@Jason Marks The mall CHL carrier was wise.  But yet another example of how no common citizen with a gun has ever stopped a mass shooting from taking place (there have been examples, though, of security personnel or police officers *limiting* the injuries).
What did a great philosopher once say, "You can't fix stupid".Â
Probably better have a safety meeting on how to carry in a safe manner.Â
Â
If your gun requires cocked and locked, get a different one. Â That is what DAO is for. Â If you cant stand that, get a DA/SA. Â Just don't run around with the hammer pulled back. Â That was likely his problem.Â
Â
Givin' us safe guys a bad name.Â
@Jason Marks Rational people also know that you don't always carry a gun to wherever you go. What legitimate threat existed at this internet cafe that a guy needed a gun? What level of crime existed at that location that public safety wasn't adequate? Yeah I understand the need to be armed, but if I go to a maternity ward, or to a church choir meeting, or to a library to read the Wall Street Journal, I think it's safe to leave the gun locked up at home. We're a violent nation, we ain't freaking Tombstone AZ 1874....
@Jason Marks I'm sure he would have considered himself "safe" too... until today.
Baldr said that 99% of shootings are among people that know each other. "Know thyself!" that must be in that stat too.
 @peace Actually I said that.
@LifeisGOOD007 ---nothing new under the sun. both leibniz and newton simultaneosly invented calculus, but all brilliant minds salute them both.
Can you imagine the person is the stall there talk about a no need for laxative moment . This guy probably might have his C.C.W. revoked not cool !!
Curious if the holster wasn't designed for the firearm it was holding, did it not have an adequate trigger guard, or was it some kind of mechanical failure (yes I realize how rare it is for a striker fire to release or a hammer to in inadvertently drop on a 1911). Just sounds really strange the way it's being reported.
