FLORENCE, Ore. -- Police cited a man on Monday evening after he fell asleep while driving on Highway 101 and crashed his car into a phone pole, state police officials said.

The driver of the car, Charles Ruffin, 76 of Florence, sustained minor injuries in the crash.

Police said that Ruffin was driving north on Highway 101 at around 5 p.m. Monday when he fell asleep behind the wheel.

About a mile south of Florence, Ruffin's Hyundai left the roadway and crashed into a telephone and power pole, state officials said.

The pole broke and fell onto the hood of the car, trapping Ruffin inside. The Department of Transportation closed down the highway for about 45 minutes while crews moved the power lines from the roadway.

After emergency personel extracted him from the wreck, Ruffin was driven to Peace harbor Hospital for treatment of his minor injuries.
