Police cite teens hit by car in Oakridge

OAKRIDGE, Ore. - Police cited the three teen girls hit by a car Sunday night on Highway 58 in Oakridge for failing to yield to a vehicle on the roadway.
The investigation found that the three girls, ages 13, 14 and 16, had run across Hwy 58 in the dark and into the path of an eastbound vehicle, said Chief Dale Scobert from the Oakridge Police Department.
Witnesses told police the vehicle did not have time to see or react to the girls as they ran across the road.
All three teens were taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend for their injuries.
They all face citations for "pedestrian fail to yield to vehicle on the roadway."
I'm glad they cited these kids. I am glad they were not seriously injured, this time they were lucky. They were certainly old enough to know better than to run into the street. At least with the citations, the mother(s) will not have an open shot at suing the driver for doing nothing wrong except trying to avoid killing them when they darted out in front of her. Be responsible for your actions, teach your children about safety.Â
These girls were all old enough to know better then to cross the highway or to know how to do it safely/correctly. I am sick of parents jumping to their childrens defense without all the facts. People do not take personal responsibility for what they do and many parents do not teach their children to be responsible for their actions. The parents, as well, could have been cited for not supervising their minor children. KVAL's mantra is First, Fair, Accurate but in many cases in their bid to be first they only report part of the story. I will be watching to see if they update this story on the air tonight.
Hwy 58 is a major highway. It should be treated like any other hwy in Oregon.Just because it goes through Oakridge does not make it a"city" street, nor should it be treated as a city street. Most hwy's in Oregon do not have crosswalks in places that make it convenient for folks to cross the hwy. All folks should know to make sure the roadway is clear before crossing the road. The speed limit through Oakridge is 35 mph. This is ample speed to slow and stop if needed in a hurry. The fact that these kids ran out in front of the car,,indicates that they certainly were at fault
glad the girls are gona be ok,but this was there fault or the cities fault for not creating a safe place to cross wherever the girls want to cross
@Iam1woody You could have a 10-foot wide crosswalk every 20 feet and some people will choose to go across elsewhere....
Car wins every time!
As they should. When I was a kid, the #1 rule was look both ways, before crossing the street! What is the hard part in that? Todays kids think cars will HAVE to stop, but realistically, they sometimes cannot. Hard lesson to learn. Sorry for the parents, and the terror they must have felt finding out their kids just got hit by a car!
