Police: Drunk driver crashes into alcohol rehab center on 21st birthday

EUGENE, Ore. -- A drunk driver crashed his car into an alcohol rehabilitation center early Thursday morning, just hours into his 21st birthday, police said.

Daniel Dasilveira Bittar, 21, faces charges of DUII, reckless driving and second degree criminal mischief. His car was impounded.

An earlier version of this story contained an incorrect first name for Bittar based upon a police press release. A KVAL News reporter discovered the error while reviewing official documents.

Police said Bittar crashed his 1997 Chevy Malibu into Serenity Lane on East 16th just before 1:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 15 - Bittar's 21st birthday.

Bittar was trying to leave the scene when officers arrived, police said.

This was the 6th time since March 5 that police have responded to crashes where drivers suspected of being under the influence have hit objects, including a house, tree, pole, shed and parking meter.

With St. Patrick's Day this Saturday and the NCAA basketball tournament, police said drivers who choose to drink need to make plans to get home by taxi, public transit, designated driver or some other legal means.
