COOS BAY, Ore. -- Police detained a woman armed with a shotgun after a Saturday morning standoff in a Coos Bay motel, Coos Bay Police said.
The stand-off started just after 9 A.M. Saturday at the Terrace Motel near the Bunker Hill neighborhood of Coos Bay.
Officials said that the woman was acting erratically and threatened to take her own life or the lives of responding officers.
Police evacuated people from the area surrounding the motel while attempting to diffuse the situation.
The woman locked herself inside of an upstairs motel room. Officials at the scene said that the windows to the room were open, but the woman put a bed sheet up to block the view of police officers.
Officers said that they evacuated all other people on the second floor of the motel by 12 P.M.
KCBY reporters at the scene said that SWAT gunmen have moved into firing position on top of a nearby building, taking aim at the window.
Police said that at around 12:30 the woman casually left her motel room and entered another. She barricaded herself inside that one before she started breaking windows with her fist.
Police detained the woman after they shocked her with a stun gun nearly five hours after the incident started. Police loaded her into an ambulance and took her to a Bay Area Hospital to treat the lacerations she sustained while breaking out the mote room windows.
KCBY's Ricky Maranon spoke with the Coos Bay Police Chief after the incident. The Chief said that while the woman threatened police saying that she had a shotgun, she was only armed with a large hunting knife.
The Coos Bay District Attorney's Office said that they believe the woman to be 51-year-old Sylvia Goodwin.
She will have her wounds treated at Bay Area Hospital before being lodged at the Coos County Jail on charges of criminal mischief and burglary charges.
Police arrested two other people at the scene during the standoff. One of the arrests was made when a man who came out to watch was identified by his parole officer as being in violation of his probation.
Another man was drinking alcohol while the incident unfolded. He began to interfere with the police and was arrested.
The police state is on a roll today!
No surprise really. This motel attracts bums, druggies, drunks, etc....on top of it our TAXES will be paying for the ambulance ride and her treatment at our crappy, country hospital! On top of this, our jails are too full so she won't serve any time, never pay the ambulance and hospital because we will, the people who work for a living. Do you think she really cares? Hell no, she feels entitled to all this FREE care. For those of you who say she needs help and is mental...how do you think she got that way? My guess is drug abuse. I'd like to know how they find the money for drugs because I can barely make and I work for a living! You see it all over Coos County and no one does anything about it.  I hope to leave here and never coming back!
@Oregon Coast No the tax payers do not pay for the ambulance ride nor the medical treatment. You have no idea if this person had OHP which would pay for the medical but not the ambulance. That will go into collections and jack the price of ambulance service across the board because a loss in business is to be recovered somehow and is usually done with higher prices to consumers. So if that is what you meant by " tax payer" otherwise you are mistaken.
Same goes with medical treatment. You are misinformed on how this actually works or doesn't work.
Being angry about this sort of activity in your community is ok but what are you personally doing about it besides ranting on a comment? Get active with community groups that work with authorities to avoid situations that are attractive to the drug users that have have mental problems from their choice to use drugs. My neighborhood recently had a situation of a repo Duplex sitting empty with no real owner - the duplex became a drug users haven...as a cooperative we that live around this house worked with authorities to get this under control and have the house emptied, locked down and even moved the bank to sell the property. The new owner has been working on getting this duplex back into a real rental situation. The drug users that were squatting? some were arrested, some just scampered. Not a real solution to their problem. A drug user has help if they truly want it. It is a choice. My own daughter has been in this cycle for the past 10 years, I am exhausted. She has had many many chances with real help and has refused to stick with it and has always returned to the drug use life style. Makes no sense and after 10 years, I am done with her. She lives on the street by choice.

Our society is flooded with mental deranged persons due to years of drug use and usually that drug is meth. It burns holes in your brain and cannot be corrected EVER! The drug user is left with the mental illness for life and for some unreasonable reason continues to use, jail or prison is the only situation that forces them to get clean and deal with the illness. Is this they way to go about it? NO I don't feel it is but the fact still remains. These people are still here and we still have to deal with the horrible choices they have made for their life.
This is a real problem not only in your little corner of the Oregon but Nation Wide. Ranting on a little article helps you feel better but does not to stop the next incident coming and we all know it will come.

Would be nice to see a collation of professionals from the mental health industry, medical industry and the Law enforcement work together with citizens to help our communities deal with this very real and very dangerous sect of persons in our society.
Then there are the children sitting in Foster care because of this as well. It is a very real problem and seems to not have real solutions.
So where would you go? Why and how would it be different?
It's not just Coos County, you'll find the same in Curry, in Lane, in Douglas.
If you want to see it at it's worst you should visit Salem or Portland.
Good luck on your quest for something better though....cheers
Suicide by cop....
Looks like a high class establishment.
