Record-setting weather: Eugene off to driest start in history

EUGENE, Ore. - Barring another 3/4 inch of rain between now and Sunday, 2013 will set a record for the driest start to a year in Eugene in recorded weather history.

Rain guages at the Eugene Airport have recorded just 4.91 inches of rain since January 1, 2013, the National Weather Service said.

The average rainfall for the same time period over the last 30 years has been over 17 inches of rain.

With no substantial rainfall in the forecast, 2013 could break the record set in 2001. That year, only 5.67 inches of rain fell in the first three months of the year.
